Style Icon of the Week Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

 Happy Saturday everyone!  For this weeks style icon I've chosen Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.  There had never been a first lady so obsessively followed for her fashion prior to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. And for good reason, she was a woman who loved fashion and loved to dress.

Her shopping habits even exceeded her husband John F. Kennedy's presidential salary.   Yet, her interest in fashion never came across as frivolous instead she always exuded coolness and sophistication. And more importantly her style looked wearable to even the average American housewife at the time.  Some of the designers she loved to wear included Oleg Cassini, Coco Chanel, Hubert de Givenchey and Christian Dior. Although she spent hundreds of thousands of dollars purchasing chic ensembles -- think a-line dresses, pastel suits and pillbox hats -- her look was easily translated to American women and became affordable and attainable. 

In the '70s, Jackie's style continued to evolve. She swapped her pastels,  pill box hats and boxy separates for wide leg trousers,, striped shirts, silk scarves, espadrilles and over sized sunglasses for daytime dressing and draped, patterned, glamorous gowns for evening. Until her death in 1994, Jackie O continued her reign as one of the most stylish American women.Her influence is still alive today.

What makes Jackie a style icon is her unique fashion sense, her ability to change with the times and knowing what worked for her.  Jackie's look will never go out of style.

How Do You Know What Your "Personal Style" Is?

Every fashionista at one time or another has heard "find your own style and stick to it!' or some variation.  But what is personal style?  What determines someone's own "personal style?  And when they say stick to it does that mean sticking yourself into a box and never experimenting with fashion?  I don't think so.  Yes most people have some kind of personal style, and unless they're a diehard fashionista or shopaholic they probably don't even realize it.  But preferring one type of dress does not mean that you have to be trapped in that box always.  Having a personal style is basically just a preference for certain types of clothes, adding your own personal touches to each outfit.  Audrey Hepburn had a great sense of personal style.  She knew what did and did not work for her, and she knew what she liked.  Her style lives on today in one form or another.  Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis are also style icons.  Today we have Olivia Palermo and Victoria Beckham.  What these women have in common is a love for fashion, wearing what they like and makes them comfortable, and knowing what won't work on them.  Most people would classify Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly as "classic."  This may be true, but both experimented with fashion and weren't afraid to step out of their box and try trends or just something they liked.  I myself don't have one particular fashion style.  I've been told this is "creative" style because I have a mix of classic, trendy, sporty and even some vintage that I somehow make work.  I love experimenting with clothes, mixing and matching and making several outfits out of a few items.  I also love the Boho Chic look and do find myself buying a lot of flowy, pretty things.  The point is that yes we may all have a style that we go back to time and again, but we shouldn't be afraid to step out of our box and experiment.  Adding items from other styles is fun.  Just make sure that you love it, it looks good on you, makes you feel good and that you feel comfortable wearing it.  If you want tips to help develop your personal style and see what works for you read this article I found on TLC TLC 10 Ways to Develop Your Personal Style  Now go shopping and have fun!
